jack-o'-Lantern - Digital Sculpture by Surajit Sen

This sculpture explores the unsettling boundary between grotesque humour and pure horror. I wanted to transform an ordinary Halloween pumpkin into a living, malevolent presence, where exaggerated facial anatomy, deeply furrowed brows, a sinister grin and irregular, predatory teeth create a character that feels disturbingly alive. The richly carved surface follows the organic rhythm of the pumpkin, allowing every crease, wrinkle and imperfection to contribute to its personality.

For me, the real challenge lies in making the grotesque believable. Through digital sculpting, I have attempted to balance stylisation with anatomical conviction, using expression, surface detail and visual contrast to evoke both fascination and unease. Beneath that wicked smile lies a mischievous menace, a creature that appears to enjoy the very fear it inspires.
